Adafruit VL53L4CX Time of Flight Distance Sensor
The VL53L4CX is a high-performance Time-of-Flight (ToF) distance sensor breakout board from STMicroelectronics, re-packaged by Adafruit with a user-friendly STEMMA QT / Qwiic connector for easy, solderless connection. It is designed for precision distance measurement from approximately 1 mm up to 6000 mm (6 m), making it suitable for robotics, obstacle detection, interactive systems, and more.
Key Features
Long-range distance sensing: approximately 1 mm to 6000 mm measurement range.
ToF technology: uses an invisible 940 nm laser VCSEL emitter and advanced histogram-based firmware to measure time-of-flight for precise readings.
Narrow field-of-view (~18°) for targeted detection and minimal interference.
Multi-object detection capability: can identify when more than one object is in view and report multiple distances.
Works with 2.8–5 V logic and power thanks to a built-in regulator and level shifter, compatible with many microcontrollers.
I²C interface with STEMMA QT / Qwiic connector for plug-and-play use with supported boards.
Small breakout size with standard headers included, easy to integrate into prototypes and embedded designs.
Typical Applications
Autonomous robots and drones needing accurate distance or proximity sensing.
Interactive installations or smart objects detecting user presence or gestures.
Embedded systems measuring clearance, height, or gap using a compact sensor.
DIY electronics or educational kits where simple, high-performance distance measurement is required.
